Tobacco-Based Corrosion Inhibitors

DACCO SCI, INC., has teamed with Inhibitrol to test corrosion inhibitors from extracts of tobacco plants and other phytochemical materials.  The extracts offer several advantages over traditional inhibitors, such as chromates:

The addition of tobacco extracts to salt water dramatically reduces the corrosion and coating degradation of painted steel and aluminum.

Aluminum Steel
Bare metals are also protected in salt water by the tobacco extract:

Left specimen:  With tobacco -- No corrosion

Right specimen:  No tobacco -- Heavy pitting and corrosion or rusting

The plant extracts are effective in a number of environments and conditions.

Extracts from different tobacco strains and plant parts are effective in reducing the corrosion rate of aluminum and steel in salt water over a wide range of concentrations of tobacco extract.  The extract is as effective as chromates. Extracts from different tobacco strains and plant parts are very effective in reducting corrosion.
Steel pickled in acid is dark and pitted; steel pickled in acid+tobacco is shiny and clean In strongly acidic solutions used to clean rust and mill scale from steel, the acid also attacks the metal.  Use of the metal reduces weight loss due to metal dissolution and provides a shiny surface.
